Chapter 13
The Kirkite females, Lyrica determined, were quite beautiful, and the males were rather handsome. Of course, some individuals had rougher or plainer features than others, but on the whole the species was pleasant to look at through the perspective of her human eyes, and it saddened her that they were about to be lost.
If sheâd had her druthers, she would do what she could to save themâ¦at least enough of them to ensure their species could continue to exist, albeit on another world.
But it was impossible. All of the points Captain Yarrum had made to Marika in the main conference room had been valid. The risk to the Fordham was too great, and the risk to the Kirkites themselves was too great. Unfortunately, this was going to be a sad case where Technological Darwinism was proved outâthe first such case, as far as Lyrica or anyone else knew of.
She had known about the concept pretty much all of her life, dating back to when she was a teenager, and had decided xenoanthropology was the field she wanted to study and make a living from. But it had always been a theoretical concept. No one had ever been able to point to an actual case where a sentient species had been destroyed because they didnât have the means to save themselves from annihilation.
Because of thatâ¦because the concept had always been just an idea, she had never really thought of it much, and had developed a kind of blasé attitude towards it.
But now, she was standing in the home of a being who wouldnât be alive in less than forty shipdaysâFordham timeâand whose entire world was going to disappear from the universe, its atoms doomed to swirl around forever in Sabrinaâs ammonia and hydrogen clouds.
And it was making her feel incredibly sad.
Still, thoughâ¦she had a job to do.
The home they were in was very much a modest one. It was practically a garret. Dark, even though it was a bright day outside, quite dingy, and furnished sparingly and simply. There was nothing superfluous in this home, Lyrica noted. In her own home on Aquila Prime, for example, she had several chairs that were rarely ever sat in. She had bought them as accent pieces, because they added pops of color to certain portions of her house, and they were only ever put to use on the few occasions she hosted a party. But in this home, there was no extra furniture. There was only what the occupants needed.
There were two of themâ¦a male and a female, both wearing inexpensive-looking clothing of coarse fabric. The male was on the floor, where he had fallen when the sleeping gas struck. The female was seated at the table. Sheâd had time to make an ersatz pillow with her arms on the tableâs surface before passing out. It appeared as though she had been doing something involving colorful beads and string. Was she a seamstress? A jewelry maker? Was what she was making purely for
